Water-treatment buying advice

Whole-house water filter or water softener?

Understand the difference between whole-house filtration, water softening and drinking-water RO, with a practical villa installation checklist.

Match the treatment to the concern

A whole-house filter and a water softener have different jobs. Filtration depends on the media and the model's stated performance. Sediment filtration is selected for particles; carbon filtration is selected for the claims supported by that particular system.

An ion-exchange softener targets hardness minerals, principally calcium and magnesium, and needs regeneration. It should be sized from water hardness and demand. Do not assume a sediment or carbon cartridge provides equivalent softening.

Check the water before specifying equipment

For scale concerns, obtain a hardness measurement and relevant water-analysis information. Note whether the supply reaches the property through a storage tank or other treatment. Give the installer the existing plumbing and pump details.

A drinking-water RO system may be a separate point-of-use requirement. Combining equipment requires a designed treatment sequence; buying several unrelated products is not a system specification.

Villa and whole-property installation checklist

  • Required peak flow when several outlets run together, and acceptable pressure loss.
  • Inlet pressure, pipe size, installation location and service access.
  • Suitable protection and installation conditions for the chosen model.
  • Drain and regeneration requirements where applicable.
  • Isolation and bypass arrangements agreed with the installer.
  • Space for maintenance and any salt storage or replenishment required by a softener.

Compare maintenance as well as purchase price

Ask for the replacement-media or cartridge requirements and the servicing scope. For softeners, compare regeneration settings, water use and salt needs under your expected conditions. Confirm how the quoted equipment is sized and what installation includes.

A useful quotation identifies the treatment objective, proposed equipment, assumptions, supplied parts and exclusions. Share your water results and site details with us so we can check the selection before purchase.
